Kyrmen Shylla, Cabinet Minister and local MLA, handed over garbage trucks to Khliehriat West and Lad Rymbai villages on Monday, as part of efforts to strengthen waste management and sanitation under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) fund for the financial year 2024–2025. Ceremonies were held at Khliehriat West Community Hall and Lad Rymbai Datsympein Community Hall.

At Khliehriat West, Shylla urged community leaders and village authorities to fully utilise the truck to address the pressing issue of waste disposal in Khliehriat Town. He also highlighted key development projects in East Jaintia Hills, including a newly approved Rs. 125 crore road connecting the San Shnong areas to Shkentalang in West Jaintia Hills, which is expected to boost trade and tourism.

The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi (IAS), Sub-Divisional Officer (Sadar) M. Kumar (IAS), Rymbai-Khliehriat MDC Violet Lyngdoh, Principal of Jaintia Eastern College Dr. P. Nongtdu, traditional heads, and local residents.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner and DMF Trust Chairperson Shivansh Awasthi expressed confidence that the garbage truck would significantly improve waste management in market areas. He stressed the importance of segregating waste at the source and shared plans to develop small composting units under DMF or MNREGA. He added that plastic waste, when collected in bulk, could be sent to cement factories for incineration.

A similar programme was held at Lad Rymbai Datsympein, attended by the same officials, traditional heads, and residents of the area.
