KSU’s indefinite sit-in-protest to continue against NEIGRIHMS failure to implement 80:20 female-to-male ratio

The indefinite sit-in-protest by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has entered the third day on Saturday to pressurize the authority of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to fulfill all its demands that include the implementation of the 80:20 female-to-male ratio in the nursing job recruitment in the institute.
The union has also announced that the protest will continue after it decided to outrightly rejected the statement of NEIGRIHMS Director Dr N Mehta that the institute is awaiting the approval of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
“We totally rejected the director’s statement. Our demand is clear that NEIGRIHMS should bring necessary policy as done in other states to for implementation of 80:20 female-to-male ratio,” chairman of the KSU employment cell Reuben Najiar said while maintaining that the union will continue with its indefinite protest till NEIGRIHMS is ready to fulfill all demands.
Asked, Najiar said that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Regional Institute of MEdical Sciences (RIMS) are also implementing the 80:20 female-to-male ratio and they did not have to seek any permission from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare because they have proper policy in place.
“The Ministry in its previous letters had only adviced the NEIGRIHMS to make necessary changes in its recruitment policy. The governing council of NEIGRIHMS – comprising representatives from ministry, state government including director and other officials – can take a call on this as it is a matter of policy, which does not directly involved the ministry. Therefore, it is all about having the will to do it,” he stated.
“If the ministry is allowing AIIMS, RIMS to implement 80:20 female-to-male ratio then why would it bar NEIGRIHMS from doing the same?” Najiar asked.
He further added, “The ministry is not barring but the problem here is NEIGRIHMS does not have a policy on this. We have taken up this matter since 2023 but Director has failed to take any steps to bring necessary changes in the recruitment policy.”
On the other demands of the union, the chairman said, “Another important demand of the union is related to the age limit. All these years, they have mentioned 35 years in their advertisement and now, this has been reduced to 30 years. This was after Director had written to the Ministry and latter replied that age is 30 years but it has never issued any notification in this regard.”
“We also strongly demand that job examination centre should be set up in Shillong,”he added.
Further, Najiar said that the union has been demanding immediate review of roster register.
“We have also noticed several discrepancies in the roster register. In fact they had also amend the current advertisement in which some seats from OBC were tranferred to open category. This clearly shows that there were discrepancies especially in regards to reservation plotting to which our demand is to immediately review the roster register,”he added.
