KSU: Star Cement guards opened fire, violence erupted

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Lumshnong Unit, East Jaintia Hills District, expressed grave concern over the untimely demise of Sngewbha Suchiang, a 19-year-old youth of Lumshnong village, after he was run over by one of the trucks belonging to Star Cement on May 18.
The 16-wheeler truck was driven by Sailangmi Dkhar from Mookynniang, Khliehtyrshi, West Jaintia Hills District at the time of the incident.
In a statement, Mechak Kyndoh, General Secretary of the KSU Lumshnong Unit, said that Suchiang, who was driving a Mahindra Pick-Up vehicle, attempted to overtake the truck near Wahiajer, Narpuh, but Dkhar did not allow him to do so.
Suchiang, after some time, overtook the said truck and entered the premises of Star Cement, waiting for the truck at Gate No. 1 of the company. When the truck entered Gate No. 1, it stopped near the pick-up vehicle, and Suchiang climbed onto the said truck from the handyman’s side with the intention of speaking with Dkhar. The KSU alleged that Dkhar sped up the truck, causing Suchiang to fall, after which the truck ran over him, resulting in his immediate death. The incident, they said, was captured on CCTV footage of Star Cement.
The KSU condemned the barbaric nature of Dkhar, who, they alleged, did not hesitate to take the life of a fellow human being. They also urged the law-enforcing agency to immediately arrest Dkhar and ensure exemplary punishment.
The Union stated that local residents went to the premises of Star Cement after learning about Suchiang’s death. They claimed that the situation went out of control and led to the burning of several trucks belonging to Star Cement after the company’s security guards allegedly opened fire with their weapons.
The KSU demanded that the management of Star Cement take full responsibility for the untimely demise of Sngewlang Suchiang, as the truck involved belonged to the company.
