The education cell of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday asked the state’s education department to inform about the strategy for conducting the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) to ease the difficulties of the students.

A delegation led by KSU-EC chairman Raymond Kharjana also met and handed over a memorandum to the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui for his necessary intervention.

Kharjana in the letter stated that it was very disheartening to learnt that, although the entrance test was announced by the UGC in late 2020, the state education department and North Eastern Hills University, where numerous colleges of Meghalaya are affiliated failed to strategize any plan for smooth implementation of the CUET and in sensitizing the student’s community of the same.

Stating that the date for registration has been notified by the competent authority to start commencing from April 6, he said students from Meghalaya were being informed about the same only on April 22 and directed by their respective educational institutions to register themselves in haste for the entrance exam through the National testing agency (NTA)  portal.

As is yet to ascertain up to what extent the proposed entrance test may prove beneficial or detrimental to the aspiring students of Meghalaya, he said.

“Therefore, The education cell of the Khasi Students’ Union (Central executive council) while expressing its feeling of dejection, through this missive would like to seek clarification from your good self on the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) with regards to the plans and strategy the Education department would come up to ease the adversities and difficulties of the students,” Kharjana said.

Meanwhile, the KSU has also reminded the state government of the need to set up a state university which is also a long pending demand and aspiration of the union and the people of the state as a whole.

“The union is of the opinion that the state University wouldn’t only be a boon in terms of fulfilling the aspiration of the student’s community in the state, but it would also help the state to counter similar adversities if arise in the future,” Kharjana asserted.
