An activist of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) was killed after a clash broke out during an anti-Citizenship Act meeting held at Ichamati, Shella in East Khasi Hills District on Friday.

Confirming this, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah said the Lurshai Hynniewta, a member of the Sohra unit, succumbed to his injuries at Sohra CHC.

The KSU on Friday organized a public meeting to oppose the CAA and demand implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) at Ichamati market.

Sources said after the meeting, non tribals who were armed with machetes and sticks came and cornered the KSU leaders which led to the clash.

In the melee many KSU activists from Sohra, Shella and adjoining areas were injured, they said.

Sources also said that KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar was also attacked but was unhurt while the Sordar of Ichamati village and the police were also assaulted by the non tribals.

During the incident, many vehicles including buses were also vandalized.

Meanwhile, another source said that the clash broke out after some KSU activists start beating non-tribals. This has provoked the non-tribals in the village to come out and start attacking the KSU members.

The source said the officer-in charge of Shella police station was also injured during the incident. A total of three vehicles including government vechile of a magistrate who was on duty, were also vandalized, they said.

When contacted, home minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that the government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. He said police have also been asked to arrest the people responsible for the death of the KSU member.
