KSU meets Mondal, seeks intervention over soaring electricity bills of BPL families at Nongmensong

The KSU Nongmensong Unit has approached Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal, seeking his intervention into the exponential increase in electricity bills among households in the BSUP housing complex in Nongmensong.
The residents have been complaining about the surge in bills since the installation of pre-paid smart meters.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, President of the KSU-NU J Pohthmi said that the residents, who are mostly below the poverty line, were previously paying Rs 500-600 per month for electricity. However, after the installation of smart meters, the bills have skyrocketed to a minimum of Rs 2000 per month, which is unaffordable for them.
In view of this, he said the unit has urged the Power Minister to intervene and address this concerning issue while appealing to retain the previous fee structure, considering the financial struggles of the residents.
“We also appeal to you sir in a humanitarian ground to kindly retain the previous fee for a month’s recharge of Rs 500-600 taking into consideration that all the residents in the housing complex are financially poor and most live from hand to mouth.
We have faith that under your able leadership this matter can be solve amicably in a manner benefitting the entire households within the BSUP housing complex of Nongmensong,” Pothmi stated in the letter.
To a query, the president informed that the meeting was fruitful with power the minister assuring to look into the issue.
“He (Mondal) also assured to discuss the issue during a review meeting to be chaired by him tomorrow, Pohthmi added further.
