The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday sought police action against the general manager and project director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for failing to repair the dilapidated National Highway-6.

In an FIR lodged with the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, KSU-EJHDU president Streamly N Suchen said, “I hereby request you to register this complaint and take appropriate legal action against the individuals responsible, as their activities are causing a disturbance to the public and general well-being of the citizens. Such actions are against the law and pose a threat to public safety.”

NH-6 is under the supervision of the NHAI.

He informed that on August 8, 2023 when the KSU were democratically protesting over the road condition, one of the employees of the NHAI who is the manager technical of the NHAI Biswajit Jyoti Lahkar assured that the authority would repair the entire stretch of the NH-6 within 6 weeks’ time from this date of incident at Lumshnong Toll Plaza.

“(However), it has been almost 8 weeks now no sign of work has started on the part of the NHAI despite assuring the union and the protestors to start the work,” Suchen said while slamming the NHAI for giving a false promise and thereby continue to neglect its duty.

“This act of the NHAI authorities has caused a public nuisance for the public who had to travel through this highway in which the road condition has worsened day by day. It has also endangered the lives of commuters and drivers driving this road and has caused a great sense of fear,” he added.
