The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded the state government to conduct proper inquiry into the alleged explosion of the tanks, which stored toxic effluents from the uranium exploratory mining in South West Khasi Hills district.

This came after a site inspection was conducted by the members of the KSU from South West Khasi Hills at Nongbah Jynrin on Tuesday.

President of the KSU-SWKH, Forwardman Nongrem informed that it was found that four tanks have developed excessively wide cracks.

“This time the cracks have become wider as compared to the previous inspections we had conducted. We don’t know if this may be the result of the explosion,” he said.

Nongrem said that the union had from time to time taken up the matter with the state government but unfortunately no action was taken to address this concern. He said failing to take action may pose danger to the area and the district as a whole.

“Therefore, we demand the state government to conduct a proper inquiry into the matter,” he said while adding that the union will continue to find out the truth.

The president said the union cannot accept the claim made by the authorities concerned that the alleged explosion is just a false alarm. “It is too early to conclude in this manner as we don’t believe that they can complete the enquiry in just one day,” he added.
