KSU demands NLU to amend job advertisement due to excessive qualification criteria

The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded the National Law University (NLU) Meghalaya to immediately amend the recent advertisement for recruitment to various posts of assistant professor in the institute.
In a letter to the registrar of the university, KSU has expressed its discontent against the advertisement published by National Law University Meghalaya on the 9th of June, 2025 for various posts of Asst. Professor which has demanded extreme and excessive qualification to be met by the local indigenous candidates.
“Thus, the Union humbly request you that necessary changes be brought in the said advertisement else there will be no indigenous candidates willing to
apply and also there will be no indigenous candidates who will make through as faculty position in NLU Meghalaya.” it said.
The KSU has alleged that in the said advertisement, the minimum qualification that is kept for the post of Asst. Professor is at Academic Level 11 which is contrary to the basic
recruitment and even against UGC norms. Academic level 10 is the entry level position for faculty members for the post of Asst. Professor. Academic
level 11 is achieved via promotion after completion of 4 (four) or more years of services and having a PhD and other attributes.
“This basic principle is applied in all the other 26 NLUs in India whereby for the post of Asst. Professor, the required academic Level is 10 which is the entry level, so why is NLU Meghalaya seeking for Academic level 11 as a minimum criterion in its entry level while the other NLUs in India are going with Academic level 10. The sole reason is that the Vice Chancellor does not want to recruit any person from the State,” it said while adding “To substantiate its claims, the Union would like to annexed 10 (ten) recent advertisement for the post of Asst. Professor published by other NLUs across India where we can see vast difference in the eligibility criteria and the UGC guidelines whereby it will be distinct that the said advertisement is against UGC norms.”
Further, the KSU also alleged that the other excessive criteria are 60% or 7.00 CGPA in preceding degrees which is not usually asked for along with other criteria thereon. This criterion is
even applied for the post of Registrar which was advertised on 24.04.2025, it said.
“Although, not specifically mentioned in the advertisement but candidates who are qualified for such post but fall short of the said percentage in any year of their academic careers are unable to apply for this post. This again is the arbitrary used of power by the Vice Chancellor against the advertisement,” the union further stated.
