    The Department of Political Science, in collaboration with the IQAC of Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai, celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 with a district seminar on “Women Empowerment.” The event brought together experts, academicians, and law enforcement officials to discuss key issues affecting women and highlight government initiatives promoting gender equality.

    FB Basan, Additional Deputy Commissioner, was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Charis Mine P. Khonglah, State Resource Person on Gender Intervention, MSRRLS, was the Guest of Honour. Key speakers included RM Suchiang, Sub-Inspector, West Jaintia Hills District, and P Saio, who represented Padma Shree awardee Trinity Saio. Dr. EM Blah, Principal of the college, delivered the keynote address. The seminar was coordinated by D Lamare, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, who emphasized the importance of raising awareness about women’s empowerment.

    Dr. Charis Mine P Khonglah spoke about various government initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. Dr Manika Agarwal, Professor and in-charge HOD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, NEIGHRIMS, addressed the impact of domestic abuse on women’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. She highlighted cases of domestic abuse in Meghalaya, stressing that despite its matrilineal society, such issues remain prevalent. She emphasized education as the key to combating domestic abuse.

    Around 250 students from across the Jaintia Hills district participated in the seminar. The event was chaired by E. Sungoh, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science. L Kharpuria, HOD, Department of Political Science, delivered the welcome address and led the International Women’s Day pledge. The seminar concluded with the felicitation of guests, resource persons, and participating colleges.
