KHNAM legislator Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday threatened to boycott the 50th year of statehood celebrations if the government fails to address the various issues concerning the state.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Nongrum said, “…I call upon the state government to immediately address and resolve the impending issues of immense public importance, failing which, I regret to inform you that I will be compelled to boycott the celebration of fifty years of statehood…on account that we the elected representatives of the people in the government and those in opposition, have failed the public at large…”

The MLA has demanded the state government to revisit the reservation policy for appointments to various services/posts under the state government and provide for a separate reservation policy for academics/admissions.

“…even after fifty years, as a legislature, we have failed to come up with an enactment of a proper legislative act and law that will govern the reservation in appointment(s) within the state of Meghalaya and we still seek to rely on an old aged resolution, let aside revisiting the suitability of the said aged old reservation policy, to the present day demography of the population,” he asserted.

The other demands include enhancement of upper-age limit in appointment to various services/posts under the state government,  creation of separate Meghalaya state cadre for IAS, IPS, IFS etc, relocation of the Sweepers’ colony and resolution of state boundary issues.
