The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has suggested the state government to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the issue related to the PWD land at Barik point.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Monday, KHNAM president and North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum said, “We would request the government to examine the possibility of an all-party meeting to discuss this issue so as to generate more ideas and contribution to the betterment of our beloved capital city.”

He said the party also suggest the government to drop the idea of a shopping mall and to instead consider a park-cum-parking lot in Barik point that will contribute to the aesthetic beauty of Shillong city.

“As to the idea of a shopping mall in the MTC complex which is floated by some leaders, KHNAM is against the idea of a shopping mall anywhere in the congested arrea of Shillong,” the MLA said.

He further states that a shopping mall just opposite the hospital will generate more noise and will cause added disturbances to patients in the Shillong civil hospital.

“Any project leading to increase in noise pollution adjacent a major established hospital will be against all environmental norms and may invite legal proceedings against the government,” he added.

Morever, he said those attending and dropping patients in the hospital face real difficulties with parking as those who come to Shillong from rural areas during office times have no parking spaces and usually park their vehicles in Them Bijoy. According to him, what Shillong need most at present is a spacious parking lot and not a shopping mall.
