The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has demanded investigation by an independent team of experts into alleged effect of high radiation at Nongbah Jynrin village in South West Khasi Hills district.

“The party strongly demands a swift investigation of the matter which should be done by an independent team of expert which should include the economist Mr BremleyWnabantei B Lyngdoh,” KHNAM state youth wing president, Thomas Passah said in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said the report of high radiation at Nongbah Jynrin and the reports of an explosive from the uranium tank in the village is a matter of great concern and of importance for the state government.

“We have seen that the authorities have given a different statement based on the report of the local police who have visited the spot after the alarm was raised,” Passah said.

Taking the video reports into consideration, the youth president said the party suggest that the government should not take the matter too lightly. After more than three decades, rusting of pipes and development of cracks in such constructions cannot be ruled out, he added.
