SHILLONG: The Town Committee department of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will examine the documents related to the inclusion of the eight villages under the Nongpoh Town Committee (NTC) before taking a final decision on the matter.

The decision was taken at a meeting held between the Executive Member in-charge Town Committee Paul Lyngdoh along with the local MDC, chairman of NTC and representatives of the eight villages here on Wednesday.

After the meeting, Lyngdoh told reporters that the meeting was convened after the eight villages have expressed their wish to withdraw from the NTC.

“In view of this, we have decided that the documents and records related to the inclusion of these villages under the NTC will be examined by the town committee department,” he said.

Before taking a call on the matter, the EM said that a spot assessment to gather public opinion will also be conducted besides taking into consideration representations to be signed by the residents of the eight villages whether they are for or against the continuation of these villages in the NTC.

Asked, Lyngdoh said that the villages have proposed to withdraw from the NTC due to conflicts with regards to the developmental activities which the latter has assured but could not deliver as expected by them.

Another reason, he said is because of the resentment in the provisions of the United Khasi- Jaintia District (Establishment of Town Committee) Act, 1960 which allows citizens of India to elect the members of the town committee.

“However I have clarified that the department in its internal meeting held recently had proposed to bring amendment to the Act by substituting the word of citizens of India with Khasi residents of the district,” Lyngdoh said.
