KHADC project worth Rs 14 Cr in limbo, new EC assures measures

A team from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) led by executive member in-charge council assets Pynkhraw Kharjahrin on Wednesday conducted an inspection of the Khasi Traditional and Cultural Centre, a Rs 14 crore project located at Jingkieng Kalong near Umiam Lake.
The project, which includes halls, rooms, a restaurant, and cottages, remains incomplete and has deteriorated significantly due to delays.
Kharjahrin informed that during the inspection, it was found that the structures have become a hub for immoral and anti-social activities, prompting concerns about the project’s impact on the community.
He said the project was initiated in 2018, but its progress was halted due to a complaint filed by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB). A fire incident also damaged the restaurant, while the cottages are in a deplorable condition.
Kharjahrin expressed that continuing the project in its current state would burden the council’s finances.
“However, under the new Executive Committee (EC), efforts will be made to ensure that all projects benefit the local population and enhance revenue generation,” he said while assuring that the new EC will implement projects effectively, eliminating the need for external funding.
Regarding the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to construction near Umiam Lake, Kharjahrin stated that the previous EC failed to follow up on the matter.
“The court (in its ruling) had directed that existing structures adhere to environmental norms, but the project remains stalled,” he said.
According to him, the new EC is committed to resolving these issues and moving the project forward.
