The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has asked the Assam government to immediately stop the construction of its police transit camp at Khanapara in Ri Bhoi district.

Executive member in-charge Elaka, Jambor War told reporters that after being entrusted to look into the matter, he had recently conducted an inspection to the site and found out that Assam has illegally constructed the transit camp at Khanapara.

He said immediately the Syiem of Hima Mylliem and Syiem of Raid Marwet along with the headman of Khanapara were also summoned following which the department has been able to get clarity and gather enough proof regarding the particular land.

War said subsequently, the deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi was informed for taking necessary action to stop the illegal construction since the land falls under the jurisdiction of the Hima Mylliem and Raid Marwet.

“The KHADC has also written to the Assam chief secretary, DGP and deputy commissioner of Kamrup district with a request to ensure the construction is immediately stopped,” he said.

Asked, the EM said that the council is still waiting for the response from the Assam government on the matter before deciding on the future course of action.
