The Jaintia Students Union (JSU) Shillong Circle on Friday met the Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Vijay Kumar Mantri requesting him to take up with the government & National Testing Agency for the setting up a Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examination centre in Jowai Town, West Jaintia Hills District.

Adviser of the Union A Suchiang said at present, many students from Jaintia Hills are compelled to travel long distances to Shillong or other far-off centres to appear for the CUET exam. This poses several challenges which we would like to bring to your attention; long distance travel, students often have to leave early in the morning and return late in the evening, which causes stress and fatigue—especially during a crucial exam. Traffic congestion in Shillong city is another problem for the students, especially during peak hours. Many students have experienced delays and anxiety due to traffic jams on the way to exam centres.

Financial hardship for poor students; a large number of students in this region come from economically weaker backgrounds. The cost of transportation, food, and in some cases accommodation, adds a financial burden to families who are already struggling.

He informed that during this meeting, the Commissioner and Secretary assured the delegation that officials would be sent to survey some institutes or any suitable centre for setting up the CUET exam centre.

“We from the JSU are ready to work with the government and provide any assistance needed for the smooth setup of the CUET exam centre, for the betterment of our students from the region,” Suchiang said.
