The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has decided to seek the intervention of the deputy chief minister in-charge transport Sniawbhalang Dhar for erecting a lifesize statue of U Kiang Nangbah, a legendary freedom fighter of the Jaintias, at a land owned by the department near the Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai.

Speaking to reporters after paying rich tribute to the freedom fighter on his 161st death anniversary in Jowai on Saturday, JSU general secretary Trebor Suchen informed that the union had already submitted a proposal requesting the transport department to give 2000-3000 sq ft of land for erecting the lifesize statue of U Kiang Nangbah at Lad-Nartiang, a junction bordering Ladthadlaboh and Mihmyntdu village, as part of the Jowai beautification.

He said last year, the union along with the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong, Jowai had approached the former arts and culture minister Sanbor Shullai for erecting of the statue in honour of the freedom fighter. The matter was also consulted with the Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai.

He added sadly, there was fruitful outcome from the meeting held with the transport department under the leadership of the former transport minister Dasakhiat Lamare.

“Therefore, we have decided to again approach the present minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar and we will see what is the outcome of the meeting. We will probably meet him next month,” Suchen said.

JSU leader said that the land is owned by the transport department. He recalled that the former minister had informed the union that the land would be utilized for helipad service and said but the union had only asked for 2000-3000 sq ft of land for the purpose of erecting the statue of U Kiang Nangbah.
