The Jaintia Students Movement (JSM) has demanded the state government to stop the alleged illegal construction of a police outpost by the Assam government at Saba village in West Jaintia Hills District.

The demand came after five members of the United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) were attacked by a mob of Karbi people from Umkhyrmi Village, West Karbi Anglong District on April 23, while they were inspecting the building constructed by Assam Police Department at Saba village.

“We condemned the assault on the UHM members and demand the government to dismantle the building already constructed by Assam Police at Saba Village,” JSM president L Rymbai said.

He said the organization also demand conduct of a joint spot inspection to authenticate that the construction works has been stopped permanently

The government should also deploy armed police personnel in Saba Village for safety and security of the people, Rymbai said.

“The JSM Central Body demands the establishment of a Police Outpost of Meghalaya Police Department next to the Police Outpost under process of Assam Police Department in Saba as an alternate solution to the Government of Meghalaya and the District Administration, West Jaintia Hills District in the event the construction and dismantle of the building already constructed by Assam Police Department at Saba Village be stopped or carry forward,” he said.

Meanwhile, the JSM has threatened to take up the matter in their own hands of the state government fails to comply with the demand within April 30.
