Emboldened by the demand for establishing Winter Capital in Tura, West Garo Hills District, the Jaintia Students Movement on Monday called for establishing the Spring Capital in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District in the greater interest of the people of Jaintia Hills region.

In a memorandum emailed to the Chief Minister, Meghalaya and also submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District, the Jaintia Students Movement Central Body informed that they held an online meeting on July 21st, 2023 to discuss on the demand of Winter Capital by fellow social organizations from Garo Hills.

The meeting after a threadbare discussion decided to demand for Spring Capital in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District.

The memorandum said the demand is justified in view of the fact the State of Meghalaya is divided into three regions namely, the Khasi Hills region, the Garo Hills region and the Jaintia Hills region.

Moreover, there are three autonomous district councils constituted for each of the three major tribes namely the KHADC, the JHADC and the GHADC.

The Spring season marks the commencement of a new financial year and before the NGT ban on rathole mining of coals in the State, the Jaintia Hills region contributed immensely to the State’s treasury from the royalty collected from coals.

Further on December 3rd, 2022, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya laid the foundation stone for the construction of Mini Secretariat at the premise of the erstwhile PWD Jowai North Division in Ladthadlaboh, Jowai. Thus, the would be constructed mini secretariat can be upgraded to a full fledged Secretariat.
