The historic Jrisalein Ground at Chutwakhu, Jowai, which has served the community for decades, is set to receive a major facelift. Since the British era, this natural ground has been the venue for athletic meets, football matches, and other public events, including Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, long before modern infrastructure existed.

On August 27, Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla convened a meeting at the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) office to discuss plans to upgrade and beautify the ground. The meeting was attended by local leaders from Chutwakhu, representatives of the Kur Challam clan, and officials from the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Jowai, which has historically managed the ground.

During the meeting, the MLA highlighted the community’s need for proper facilities such as public galleries, boundary walls, and other essential upgrades to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. He emphasised the importance of preserving the ground’s historical legacy while making it suitable for contemporary events.

Following the discussions, Shylla conducted a site inspection of the ground alongside DV Lyngdoh, MCS, Chutwakhu headman Philanderwell Lyngdoh, and officials from the PWD. He noted that the ground has long been a central hub for the town’s events, often accommodating large crowds without adequate seating arrangements.

The MLA acknowledged the efforts of stakeholders who have long cared for the ground and called for swift action. He directed the PWD to prepare estimates for the proposed improvements, while the Kur Challam clan and the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School were tasked with submitting relevant details to facilitate the project.

With decades of history and community memories, the Jrisalein Ground’s upcoming makeover aims to blend heritage with modern amenities, ensuring it continues to serve as a vibrant hub for sports, celebrations, and public gatherings in Jowai.
