Florence Total Women and Maternity Care cum Diagnostic Center (TWAM Care), in Jowai has announced a temporary closure on August 17, in response to recent tragic incidents affecting the medical community.

Dr. Lawiki E Shullai, Managing Director of Florence TWAM Care, released a statement expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with the medical fraternity. The statement condemns the heinous rape and murder of a young Postgraduate (PG) trainee doctor at her workplace in Kolkata on August 9, 2024.

This incident was followed by a distressing act of vandalism at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, on August 15, where a large mob caused severe damage and attacked protesting medical students.

Florence TWAM Care strongly condemns these acts and will suspend its services for one day as a mark of protest and unity. This decision aligns with the nationwide withdrawal of medical services called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), demonstrating collective outrage and a demand for immediate action to ensure the safety, dignity, and respect of healthcare professionals.

The closure aims to convey that healthcare professionals deserve protection, respect, and security while performing their duties. Dr. Shullai emphasizes the necessity of implementing measures to prevent such atrocities in the future. While the closure may inconvenience patients, Dr. Shullai believes that standing together against such heinous crimes is crucial.

Patients with emergencies are advised to visit the Emergency Departments at Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai, or Woodland WK Hospital, Sabahmuswang, Jowai. Florence TWAM Care urges the authorities to take swift and decisive action to bring justice to the affected family and to implement robust policies ensuring the safety of all medical personnel in the workplace.

Dr. Shullai calls on the public to support this initiative and join in condemning these acts of violence as the healthcare community unites for a safer working environment.
