The Jowai Municipal Board overtook the Shillong Municipal Board in the disposal and treatment of Solid Waste Management.

Remarkably, the Jowai Municipal Board has started the process of segregating biodegrable waste and non biodegrable waste at source since the third week of June, this year.

Though no official notification has been issued by the Jowai Municipal Board through the medias to the local residents of Jowai Town on the decision of segregating biodegrable waste and non biodegrable waste right from their residences.

Residents were told by the staff of the municipal truck that one day in week it will be for biodegrable waste and another day for non biodegrable waste.

Some of residents do not understand what is the difference between biodegrable waste and non biodegrable waste as there is no awareness campaign conducted by the Board so far.

On the direction of the High Court of Meghalaya, the Jowai Municipal Board were compelled to resume collection of garbages from the residences of Jowai Town in first week of June.

But till date the Board is keep a tight lips where they are unloading the garbage after collecting from Jowai Town.

The Meghalaya Govt boasted of setting up a solid waste management at a total cost of Rs. 13 crore.

But till date, the Jowai Municipal has not been able to identified a land for permanent dumping site.

So the million dollar question lies where does the Jowai Municipal treats the solid waste as they have directed the residents to segregate wastes at sources.
