JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has decided to take action against illegal trading by non-tribals under its jurisdiction.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened the executive member in-charge Taxation Winning G Sungoh and executive member in-charge Political Finelyness Bareh with traditional headmen of villages located in commercial areas and along the national highway here on Thursday.

After the meeting, Sungoh told reporters that the traditional headmen have resolved to work together with the Council in checking against illegal business establishments in the two districts of Jaintia Hills region.

“We need their support and cooperation considering the shortage of manpower faced by the Council. We have asked the headmen to check and keep a record on the number of non-tribal traders in the different villages,” he said.

“If anyone is found to be operating without any trade license from the Council, we would immediately take action by shutting down their businesses,” Sungoh said.
