Power Minister, James K Sangma on Tuesday asked the opposition Congress to come up with constructive suggestions to improve the functioning of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) instead of making baseless allegations.

“We would appreciate it if the Congress can come up with constructive suggestions. Just making claims of misappropriation or mismanagement and then asking for an inquiry just for the sake of an inquiry, I think it is a waste of time,” Sangma told reporters.

He was reacting to the recent demand of the Congress for an independent inquiry against the alleged mismanagement of the MeECL.

“I believe in my responsibility as a minister in-charge power, that I have to look forward and see things as to how I can improve, I should not look back as to how others have failed, how others have contributed to the mess that we are in right now, I don’t believe in going and pointing fingers like that. I believe that we must look forward, we must work together, we must take whatever suggestions if they are good, be it from the Congress, be it from Zenith Sangma (Congress spokesperson), be it from any legislator in the opposition, they are most welcome to come up with good suggestions and we would take that into consideration. What is important is as we move forward, how we find ways and means of not repeating the mistakes which have been made in the past,” Sangma asserted.

The minister also urged the Congress to refrain from making baseless accusations as he reminded that if anything irregular has taken place, the law will take its own course.

On the allegation against the state government for appointing over 128 employees in the name of skilled multi-tasking assistants without publishing any advertisement, Sangma however said that he believes that it has been done as per the rules.

“If again something has been done which is not as per procedures or not as per the rules, not as per the law, then actions will be taken. In this instant case, I believe, it has been done as per the rules and the law,” he added.
