Upset by the government’s lackadaisical attitude of simply changing the signage of the hospital without improving the infrastructure or increasing the manpower, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Khliehriat Circle, took action by erasing the word “Civil” from the Khliehriat 100-bedded Civil Hospital signboard on Wednesday.

A delegation from the JSU, led by President Livingson Sana and General Secretary Ajoymenson Lyngdoh, met with the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) to inquire about the status of the hospital, which had been upgraded to a Civil Hospital.

In a statement, the Jaintia Students Union’s Khliehriat Circle revealed that their inspection exposed the fact that the hospital was not adequately equipped to provide quality healthcare services. The union strongly condemned the government’s actions regarding the upgrading of the Community Health Centre (CHC) to a Civil Hospital and criticized the government for neglecting the needs of the local population for a decade.

The JSU asked the government to address the deficiencies of the hospital and ensure its effective functioning and provision of adequate healthcare services.

It may be mentioned, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Civil Hospital on February 14, 2022, in the presence of the local MLA of Khliehriat, Kyrmen Shylla.

However, one year later, on March 22, 2023, the official notification for the Khliehriat 100-bedded Civil Hospital was issued by the Meghalaya Health & Family Welfare Department, dated Shillong, March 22, 2023, vide No. Health.172/2018/29.
