    International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed on Saturday in East Jaintia Hills District on the theme “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world” in Dkhiah West Community Hall Village, East Jaintia Hills District . The programme was organized by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat in collaboration with the Office of the District Medical & Health Officer, East Jaintia Hills District Khliehriat.

    In her address on the occasion, R Passah, District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat said that the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) is a global observance celebrated every year to promote the rights of persons with disabilities and to raise awareness on their well being. She further informed that the office of the District Social Welfare Officer looks after the welfare of the PwDs by extending the necessary support and assistance.

    Dr. D Shylla, District Medical & Health Officer, Khliehriat, explained the different types of disabilities.  Further, he stated that some disabilities are permanent and some are temporary which can be cured through different treatments and medicines.  

    J. Pyrtuh, representative from EPPHATHA Society explained the objectives of EPHPHATHA, he said that their organization was started in the year 2020, working for the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in East Jaintia Hills District. He stated that recently, the NGO has started a vocational training in music and weaving particularly for the Persons with Disabilities.

    B Biam, UDID in-charge, Civil Ialong Hospital spoke about the importance of enrolment and registration of PwDs for the Disability Certificate and UDID to enable them to apply for various Government schemes and services. She also urged those who are in need of aids and appliances to approach the District Resource Centre, Ialong Civil Hospital.

    S Kamar, IED, Coordinator, SSA in his speech, spoke about the various schemes available for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) like Travel Allowance, Escort Allowance, Aids and Appliances, Stipends for girls, TLM kits and Scholarship for children with special needs  and he also requested all the PwDs to approach the office of the District Mission Coordinator SSA and avail the schemes. Further, he requested the parents never refused to send your children to school because the government has given many schemes and scholarships for person with disabilities.

    During the programme, 8 Nos of PwDs were being felicitated for their venture and project that they have undertaken in handicrafts, bakery and DIY toys.

    Later, aids and appliances, gifts were also distributed to the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer.  As part of the programme, a Free Medical Health Camp was also conducted by the Office of the District Medical & Health Officer, Khliehriat.
