In a major feats for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Garo Hills Police on Monday recovered 45 suspected stolen bikes and arrested Seventeen (17) persons on charges of committing theft, robbery, dacoity, forgery, cheating and for habitually dealing with stolen bikes.

The SIT under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police investigated all undetected vehicle theft cases registered during the past 5 years.

According to police, 17 Mobile Phones and other incriminating materials recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.

The arrested persons disclosed that there are inter-state vehicle theft gangs operating across almost all districts of Assam and Meghalaya.

The modus operandi of the gangs includes that the bikes stolen from Assam are being sold in Meghalaya and vice-versa through garage mechanics and second-hand vehicle sellers.

Through these recoveries, ten (10) undetected case have been solved.

Out of 45 vehicles recovered,11 from Rajabala, 12 from Jengjal, 2 from Tura, 7 from Bongaigaon and 13 from Dadenggre.

Out of the seventeen arrested persons, 15 are from Meghalaya while 2 from Assam. Six cases from Assam were solved while 4 cases solved are from Meghalaya.

The biggest advantage of these car lifters is due to the fact that local residents of the district are purchasing second hand bikes as well as selling or exchanging their bikes without proper documentation and without obtaining the vehicle enquiry report from Police.

Some persons have purchased vehicles from online markets like OLX, Facebook etc.
