Indian National Mathematics Olympiad training camp held at USTM

The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) hosted a three-day training programme for students from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh who recently qualified for the Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO).

Held from January 4 to 6, the event was organized by the Department of Mathematics, USTM, in collaboration with the Assam Academy of Mathematics and sponsored by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai.

This training camp prepared students for the prestigious Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO), scheduled for January 19. Students from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh who cleared the RMO held on November 3, will appear for the INMO at the USTM Centre. Those who clear INMO, will be qualified to participate in International Mathematics Olympiad. The Olympiad is a key stage in the multi-tiered national talent search in mathematics, conducted by HBCSE.

The training programme at USTM saw the participation of 30 students, including 10 from Arunachal Pradesh. Five distinguished resource persons, specializing in Olympiad preparation, mentored the participants and shared problem-solving techniques. The resource persons at the training camp were Sunaina Pati, Dr. Debashish Sarma, Dr Manjil Pratim Saikia, Dr. Pankaj Agarwal and Dr. Sai Jagan Mohan.

Sunaina Pati, an undergraduate student at the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) and recipient of multiple accolades, including a silver medal at the European Girls’ Mathematics Olympiad, discussed challenging geometrical problems often featured in the INMO and IMO.

Debashish Sarma from the Department of Mathematics, GC College, Silchar, delved into combinatorics, sharing unique problem-solving strategies.

Manjil Pratim Saikia from Ahmedabad University introduced graph theory concepts to address combinatorial problems effectively.

Pankaj Agarwal from Delhi conducted sessions on solving inequalities and number theory, sharing advanced techniques and practical insights.

Sai Jagan Mohan from Andhra Pradesh explored algebra through the lens of symmetry and presented unified approaches to tackling inequalities.

The training camp began with a formal inauguration on January 4, 2025. Dr. Prabin Das, Head of the Department of Mathematics, USTM, welcomed the participants and felicitated the esteemed resource persons on behalf of USTM, the Assam Academy of Mathematics, and HBCSE.
