India, Thailand deepen defence ties as 14th Maitree Joint Military Exercise commences in Meghalaya

Against the lush backdrop of Meghalaya’s rolling hills, the 14th edition of the India–Thailand joint military Exercise Maitree-XIV began with a ceremonial opening at the Joint Training Node (JTN), Umroi, on September 1. The two-week-long exercise, scheduled to run until September 14, brings together the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army in a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing operational interoperability, tactical coordination, and defence cooperation.
For the Indian Army, a contingent of 120 soldiers from a battalion of the historic Madras Regiment is participating. Representing the Royal Thai Army are 53 personnel from the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 14th Infantry Brigade. Together, the two contingents will train shoulder-to-shoulder in counter-terrorist operations in semi-urban environments, under frameworks inspired by Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which relates to peace enforcement measures.
The scale, design, and intent of Maitree-XIV reflect more than just military training. It embodies the strategic convergence of two neighbouring countries that share deep cultural bonds, robust diplomatic ties, and a growing security partnership.
The commencement of Maitree-XIV was marked by a grand opening ceremony at the Joint Training Node, Umroi. The site itself, nestled in the scenic Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, has become a premier training facility for hosting multinational exercises. The ceremony included formal addresses, cultural exchanges, and traditional military protocols, underscoring the spirit of camaraderie that underpins the exercise.
Senior officers from both Armies delivered remarks highlighting the importance of collaboration in the evolving global security environment. The Indian contingent commander spoke of India’s enduring ties with Thailand, noting that the exercise is not only about tactical drills but also about building trust, friendship, and long-term defence cooperation. His counterpart from the Royal Thai Army echoed these sentiments, stressing Thailand’s commitment to regional stability and its appreciation for India’s role as a key security partner in South and Southeast Asia.
