India Post unveils Permanent Pictorial Cancellation honouring U Kiang Nangbah

In a landmark moment for Meghalaya’s philatelic history, India Post unveiled a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation and Special Cover in honour of U Kiang Nangbah, the legendary freedom fighter from the Jaintia Hills. Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, as chief guest, released the commemorative postmarks and covers at a ceremony on May 3 at Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai.
The event is attended by JHADC CEM Thombor Shiwat, Director of Postal Services (HQ) North East Circle K.V.L.N. Murty, Seinraij Jowai President H. Toi (also Principal of the College), Dolloi Elaka Jowai Puramon Kynjing, clan members, students, officials and staff of Dept of Posts.
Murty shares that this is the first Permanent Pictorial Cancellation ever issued in Meghalaya, aimed at spreading awareness about U Kiang Nangbah’s legacy across India and beyond. He also encourages youth to take advantage of Post Office services, not just for mail but also for saving and financial schemes.
The Special Cover, which is an envelope featuring an image and brief story of U Kiang Nangbah, is available at Shillong GPO for Rs 20 until stocks last. The Permanent Pictorial Cancellation, which carries a postmark with the image of the Kiang Nangbah Monument at Syntu Ksiar, will remain in use for the next 5–10 years.
Shylla expresses heartfelt thanks to India Post for recognising the Jaintia freedom fighter through this initiative. Though modest, he says the event is meaningful and calls for a unified image of U Kiang Nangbah for future use. He also urges that a statue be installed at the college, even if personally funded, and requests India Post to open employment opportunities for local youth.
“This is a day to remember our roots,” said H. Toi, recalling the heroism of Kiang Nangbah and the importance of honouring those who fought for India’s freedom.
