    The Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat today organized an International Women’s Day programme at Cham Cham Village Community Hall based on the theme “Choose to Challenge”. The programme was attended by R Passah, District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Dr. F Lamin, Medical & Health Officer, Pamrapaithlu PHC, R Nongbri and E Lyngdoh, Supervisors, Women Helpline 181 Shillong, B. Chadong, Centre Manager, One Stop Centre, Khliehriat and the Headman of the Village.

    Dr. F Lamin, Medical & Health Officer, Pamrapaithlu PHC in his speech stressed most importantly on the issues of mental health amongst the women. He also said that in most instances women are facing challenges on their daily activities which make them unable to cope and ultimately leads them to depression, anxiety disorder and even suicide.

    The Supervisor of the Women Helpline 181, R Nongbri briefed the gathering about the objectives of the 181 Helpline to provide with the toll-free 24-hours telecom service to any women who are affected by the violence, who are seeking support and assistance and also to facilitate the crisis and non-crisis intervention through referral to the appropriate agencies like Police Authorities, Hospitals, Ambulance services, District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Protection Officer (PO) and One Stop Centres (OSC).

    She also said that another objective of the Women Helpline 181 is to provide details about the appropriate support services, government schemes and programmes that are available to women affected by violence, in a particular situation within the local area in which she resides or is employed.

    Speaking on the objectives of One Stop Centres  (OSC), B Chadong, Centre Manager of One Stop Centre, Khliehriat said that the One Stop Centres  (OSC) are intended to support women affected by violence, in private and public spaces, within the family, community and at the workplace. She also said that the scheme  also facilitate immediate, emergency and non – emergency access to a range of services including medical, legal, psychological and counseling support under one roof to fight against any forms of violence against women.

    She further stated that women who are facing physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and economic abuse, irrespective of age, class, caste, education status, marital status, race and culture will be facilitated with support and redressal. “Aggrieved women facing any kind of violence due to attempted sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence, trafficking, honour related crimes, acid attacks or witch-hunting who have reached out or been referred to the OSC will be provided with specialized services”, she added.
