IIM Shillong, in collaboration with the Competition Commission of India (CCI), successfully hosted a Regional Workshop on Competition Law at its Umsawli campus on Friday. The event brought together dignitaries, legal professionals, academic leaders, and students to discuss the evolving landscape of competition law and its implications for India’s business and regulatory environment.

The workshop began with an inaugural session featuring Ravneet Kaur, Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India, as the keynote speaker. In her welcome address, Prof. (Dr.) Nalini Prava Tripathy, Director (In-Charge), IIM Shillong, highlighted the increasing relevance of competition law in management education. She stressed the CCI’s vital role not only as a regulator but also as an enabler of a fair, innovative, and transparent economic ecosystem. Prof. Tripathy noted that today’s management students must be equipped not just for boardrooms but also for shaping responsible and ethical markets.

In her keynote, Ravneet Kaur emphasized the importance of competition law in creating a level playing field and curbing anti-competitive practices. She spoke on the need to sensitize future business leaders, particularly management students, to the key provisions of the Competition Act, 2002, and its role in ensuring market fairness.

She also discussed major developments introduced through the Competition Amendment Act, 2023, such as the deal value threshold to regulate significant mergers and acquisitions—particularly in the digital and startup sectors. Kaur elaborated on new enforcement mechanisms like commitment and settlement frameworks that aim to speed up market corrections and reduce litigation timelines.

Highlighting the importance of self-regulation, she urged businesses to implement internal compliance systems. She also spoke about the increasing role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping market behavior, noting the CCI’s active monitoring of issues like algorithmic collusion and the broader need for accountability in AI-driven systems.

Following the inaugural session, the workshop featured two technical sessions. The first, titled “Competition Act, 2002: An Overview (with recent amendments),” was conducted by Sweta Kakkad, Member, CCI. The second session, “Competition Law Compliance,” was led by K. D. Singh, Director (Law), CCI. Both sessions explored key areas of competition law that are shaping current and future business practices. A Q&A session allowed participants to interact with the experts, reflecting the strong interest among students and faculty.

The Regional Workshop marked a vital step in bridging regulatory frameworks with academic engagement, fostering a deeper understanding of competition law among emerging leaders and decision-makers.
