The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday urged the state government not to alow holding of the Gau Pratishtha Andolan: Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra in Shillong on October 2.

“In the interest of public peace and harmony, it is urged upon he government of the state not to allow such a ‘yatra’ or program to enter our state and to be held on such date as declared by the organizers,” HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said in a memorandum to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma here.

He said beef consumption is a way of life of majority of the people in Meghalaya besides giving economic benefits to thousands of people involved in the supply and selling of meat in the state.

“While, we do not impose on others on what to eat and what not to eat, we are against anyone or any authority or group imposing their eating habits or belief system on us,” he said while adding “Further, ‘mother’ have rightful place in our society as the Hynniewtrep people and to compare them with ‘cows’ or dogs’ is a taboo in our society. Therefore, we are totally against the movement and objective of any group to dictate us to refer to the ‘cows’ as our ‘mothers’.”

Shankaracharya to host Gau Dhwaj to declare cow as mother of the nation in Shillong on Oct 2

“The proposed event caling upon the government of India to ban cow slaughter or beef consumption across India and to declare ‘cow’ as a ‘Rashtra Mata’ is nothing but an attempt to incite communal problems between different communities and faiths in our state, which have been living in harmony till date,” he further added.
