The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Saturday decided to launch the “Sierlapalang operation” against illegal immigration entering the state of Meghalaya.

Addressing media persons after CEC meeting, HYC president Roykupar Synrem said, “We have decided to launch Sierlapalang operation against illegal immigration for those people who are seeking jobs in the state.”

“The operation is to detect illegal immigrants residing in Meghalaya without proper documents, registration. Meghalaya has already enacted a law Meghalaya Identification, Registration, Safety and Security of Migrant Workers Act, 2020. As per this law, every migrant worker should be registered under this Act. We want to ensure every migrant worker should be registered and anyone found not registered and not following the provisions, our members will take necessary action as per law,” he added.

He said that one cannot deny fact that with the prevailing situation between India and Pakistan, there have been reports about illegal immigration happening in the state.

As per reports from BSF officials, there have apprehended alot of infiltrators.

“Even our members from border areas with Bangladesh have intercepted alot of infiltrators and have handed them over to police. If illegal infiltration from Bangladesh is not check, the safety and security of our state will be affected as well as country as a whole,” Synrem stated.

“Accordingly, we have directed all units and members in areas along the international border with Bangladesh to be on high alert and if they detected doubtful people, they should be apprehended and hand over to the police for necessary verification and action. We urge the police department to give priority to verify whenever such doubtful people are apprehended in the border areas,”he added.

Stating that illegal immigration is not taking place only from international border with Bangladesh, Synrem said as per reports, there are people arrested in Delhi, Chennai and other states that one of the routes these people are using is Meghalaya.

“There have been reports because of the arrests that are taking place in other states like Gujarat, Delhi, these people are finding ways to return back to Bangladesh. Some of them have been arrested in Meghalaya. With the current situation along the international border with Bangladesh, BSF is keeping strict vigil so these people will not return but they find a way to find jobs and a place to hide in Meghalaya. Therefore, we will soon launch the sierlapalang operation to ensure no illegal immigrant is allowed to reside in Meghalaya,” he added.
