The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday sought action against the 2nd officer in-charge of Pynursla police station for allegedly assaulting its members, who wanted to file a complaint against illegal smuggling of buffaloes to Bangladesh.

At the same time, the HYC also lodged a complaint before the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) against the alleged erring police officer’s highhandedness.

In a letter of complaint to the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said, “Therefore, we demand that Shri George Dkhar be prosecuted as per law and to be investigated for his bad and illegal action. We also demand that immediate action be taken against him by putting him under suspension during the course of inquiry/investigation.”

Synrem informed on February 24, members of the HYC Ri War Mihngi Circle (Pynursla Sub-division) under the leadership of its president Lamphrang Khonglam alongwith 6 other members apprehended 2 trucks, which are carrying buffaloes meant for illegally transporting to Bangladesh. After apprehending these trucks, they took them to Pynursla Police Station with the intention of filing a complaint and to urge the Police department to take necessary action as per law.

“The police personnel on duty on being led by one Shri George Dkhar, In-charge on that particular day, instead of hearing the complaint of our members and registering the complaint, started to abuse them and drag Shri Lamphrang Khonglam inside the Police Station and started to physically assault him thereby causing injury on his person. The said George Dkhar also assaulted the other members of our organisation inside the Police Station and also threatened them with dire consequences for their act of apprehending these vehicles. All of them were brutally assaulted by him inside the Police Station not only by hands but he also used ‘Lathi’ to beat them up as well as all their belongings i.e. mobile phones, wallets, etc. were taken away from their person,” he alleged in the letter.

Copies of the medical reports along with photographs of the injury on the persons of the members were also submitted.

Synrem said this action on the part of George Dkhar is a complete misuse of power and a case of Police brutality on the public and is condemned by one and all and hence strict action as per law should be taken against him and all other police personnel present in the Police Station on the said day.

“Our members are ready to co-operate and assist the authority in the investigation/inquiry process and to prove their case,” he said.

In the complaint submitted to MHRC secretary, the HYC said, “We request the Commission to kindly take necessary action against these Police personnel and provide justice to the victims of this highhandedness on the part of the Police.

Our members are ready to co-operate and assist the Commission in the investigation/inquiry process and to prove their case.”
