The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded the state government to scrap the letter of award (LoA) issued to the Broadcasting Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL) for operation and maintenance of 56 33/11 KV sub-stations.

“We urged upon the state government to re-evaluate this decision and scrap the LoA issued to BECIL forthwith for the welfare of the citizens of the state…,” HYC general secretary Roykupar Synrem said in a statement issued here.

He said the HYC had also expressed strong opposition on the matter in its letter written to the chief minister, deputy chief minister and minister in-charge power due to various grounds.

Synrem said on research by the organization, it is learnt that BECIL provides project consultancy services and turnkey solutions encompassing the entire gamut of radio and television broadcast engineering. It is a Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and not under the Ministry of Power.

“So basically, BECIL’s primary business and expertise is in radio and television broadcasting in India and abroad. Nowhere is it found, that it has any experience in the operations and maintenance of Electrical Sub-station as claimed by the Company and approved by the Management of MePDCL with the blessings of the Power Department, Government of Meghalaya,” he said.

“How can MeECL and the Power Department under the leadership of our Minister hand over the assets of the corporation to an agency which has little or no knowledge or experience in the concern field without first verifying the expertise of the Company.

This is an irresponsible act on the part of the Management under the leadership of the current CMD and it reflects badly on the present Government and the Minister Concern,” he added.

The HYC leader further stated that it also reflects badly on the leadership of the State that any Tom, Dick and Harry can come and claim an experts on any subject in the state “and if it suits one and any person concern, we can just throw away whatever assets we have to such person or entity without taking the pain of verifying the expertise of experiences.”
