The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday demanded the state government to immediately implement the Meghalaya State Sports Policy, 2019 and the Meghalaya State Youth Policy, 2021.

A memorandum was also submitted by a delegation of the HYC to the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh for his necessary intervention.

“(We) request you to support our demand and to take necessary action from your end to ensure that the two (important) policies are implemented immediately in the state,” HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said.

He said that the organization firmly believes that the Meghalaya State Sports Policy 2019 which was adopted by the Government of Meghalaya will go a long way towards promotion of sports activities in the State.

“However, it is surprised to see that the Meghalaya State Sports Policy which was notified all the way back on the 10th June, 2019 till date has not been implemented by the State government,” Kharjahrin said adding “We feel that this delay in implementation of this Policy is an act of denying the sports person to excel and is like an empty promise which needs to be addressed immediately.”

Similarly, he said that the Meghalaya State Youth Policy 2021 was notified on the 1st September 2021 but till date this important Policy for the welfare and development of the youths in the State has not been implemented as guaranteed and spelled out in this policy.

When asked, Kharjahrin said that the minister has assured the delegation that the sports department will immediately come up with a manual for implementation of the sports policy within a month’s time.

“He (minister) has also assured to take up the matter with the chief minister for convening the High Powered Committee which is looking into the implementation of the youth policy,” he added.

According to Kharjahrin, the minister has cited the Covid pandemic as the reason for the delay to implement the two policies.
