HYC demands action against illegal transportation of animals into Meghalaya

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has called for strict action against the alleged illegal transportation of animals into Meghalaya.
In a petition submitted to the Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department on Friday, HYC President Roykupar Synrem urged the department to ensure that animal transportation within and into the state adheres to relevant laws and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
He informed that on June 30, HYC members intercepted a mini-truck (AS 01 RC 7779) at the Anti-Infiltration Check-gate in Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi District.
The vehicle, allegedly used by a courier service company, was transporting nine cattle in a congested space without necessary documents for inter-state transportation.

Additionally, the animals lacked certification from the concerned authority regarding their fitness for human consumption.
Synrem said the mode of transportation is also in contravention of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, the Transport of Animal Rules, 1978 (as amended) and the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
“We failed to understand as to how such kind of transportation of animals is being allowed inside the state without following the due process of laws ie in contravention of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Transport of Animal Rules, 1978 (as amended) as well as the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988,” Synrem said, while emphasizing the need for strict adherence to laws regulating animal transportation.
