One Bangladeshi national was apprehended and handed over to the police by the members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Jatap and Shella Area Unit after he illegally crossed over to Shella village in East Khasi Hills District from Bangladesh on Sunday morning.
Muhammad Hussain revealed that he has crossed over to India to help facilitate illegal infiltration of people from Bangladesh and smuggling of various items with the support of two Indian residents of Kalibari namely Bono Biswas and Subash Baidya, HYC Jatap unit president Pyndap Shongwan said in a statement.
“He (Hussain) claimed that he would charge Rs 1000 from each illegal infiltrator but he does not know how much they are paying the two Indian residents. According to him, his role was just to help such people cross over to India from along the porous border from where they would be taken by the two Indian touts to Shillong and other parts of the state,” he said.
Shongwan informed that as per his statement, Hussain also revealed that he had helped over 50-60 illegal infiltrators in the past few days and that over 10 persons are illegally crossing over to India from Bangladesh almost every day during the past one month.
“Accordingly, we have handed him over to the police of Shella police station and demanded immediate investigation into the matter and arrest the two Indian touts involved in the facilitating the illegal entry of illegal immigrants into the state and the country,” he said while urging the border security force (BSF) to take necessary action to stop illegal movement and smuggling happening along the Indo-Bangla border.
