The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Tuesday asserted the need to work together with a national forum of different tribes which are also demanding for creation of separate states across the country.

“We want the demand for a separate Khasi state and Garoland to go beyond the boundaries of the state. There are over 18 tribes which are also demanding for separate states through a national forum. Therefore, we need to work together with the national forum,” HSPDP president KP Pangniang told reporters.

After chairing a CEC meeting of the party, Pangiang said the party had also met the leaders of the Garo State Movement Committee (GSMC) in July, this year and discussed the need to jointly take up the demands for separate Khasi state and Garoland state.

“Today the party has also decided that we will continue this movement by calling for a joint meeting between the HSPDP and GSMC to discuss the strategies for moving ahead with this movement with mutual understanding and close coordination,” he added.

He said therefore, the party would again meet the leaders of the GSMC in this regard.

“We will also discuss the need to support each other’s demand and to jointly submit memorandums and representations to the government of India for its consideration,” Pangniang stated.

According to him, a coordination committee will also be formed between the stakeholders of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills region.

Pangniang further informed that the party is also preparing to highlight the importance of the demand for separate state by organizing public awareness programmes across the Khasi – Jaintia Hills region.
