SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has asked the state government not to play with the lives of the patients after the Ganesh Das Govt Maternal Child and Health Hospital has allegedly refused to admit a pregnant woman due to lack of equipment.

According to the education secretary of the FKJGP Reginald Thabah, the incident took place at 12.30 am on Sunday when a pregnant woman from Mawlai Umjapung came to the hospital for delivery.

However, the hospital authority refused to admit due to lack of equipment to conduct the operation, Thabah said in a statement issued here on Sunday.

He said a delegation of the organisation on being informed about the incident immediately went and met the medical superintendent of the hospital.

“She (MS) told us that the hospital authority had time and again written to the health department on the matter but nothing has been done to provide all the requirements. The MS also informed that the government is yet to consider a proposal to upgrade the hospital from a district to a state hospital,” he said.

Due to this, the pregnant woman had to be immediately rush to Nazareth hospital, Thabah said while demanding the government to compensate the medical expenses.

The FKJGP leader further informed that they would also take up the matter with the health minister AL Hek tomorrow for his intervention.

” We also warned the state government not to play with the lives of the patients especially those coming from poor famiky background because Ganesh Das hospital is for them and it is the duty of the government to ensure proper facility is provided in the hospital,” Thabah stated
