    The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has sought the intervention of the Assembly’s Committee on Environment to ensure the immediate shutting down of illegal coke factories in East Jaintia Hills district.

    In a memorandum submitted to the chairperson of the committee SK Sunn on Friday, HITO president Donbok Dkhar said, “We hope that you will intervene into the matter and if need be your government will shut down all illegal coke factories in the district.”

    He said that there are about 25 coke factories operating on a daily basis in the district while alleging that most of them are running without obtaining prior permission from the authority concerned.
