High Court directed NHAI to complete repair of NH-06 by August 2025

The High Court of Meghalaya has directed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to complete the repair and renovation of NH-06 along East Jaintia Hills District by August 18, 2025.
The order was passed by the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji and Judge W Diengdoh during the hearing of PIL No.11/2022 between Kynjaimon Amse (since deceased) vs National Highways Authority & ors.
The Court observed that the PIL relates to the strengthening and improvement of the Jowai- Ratacherra project road of National Highway-6 (NH-6) of about 102.255 km in length. The strengthening and improvement work commenced on 22nd March, 2024 by NHAI where the work was entrusted to two contractors Purvanchal Buildtech Pvt. Ltd. in respect of 51 km (Jowai to Wahiajer) and Dhar Construction Company in respect of 51.255 km from Wahiajer to Ratacherra.
The Court observed that during the last hearing, the first sector of 51 km, 67 per cent and in the second sector of 51.255 km, 73 per cent of the work had been completed.
During the hearing, Shoumen Sengupta, Advocate for NHAI in his report informed that in the 51 km sector, 75 per cent of the work has been completed and in the other sector of 51.255 km, 80 per cent has been completed.
He also said that because of bad weather the work could not progress as speedily as promised when the matter was heard last while seeking further time to file a completion report.
The Court said, “Considering the submissions made and also taking into account the present weather conditions, we grant time to NHAI till 18th August, 2025 to file a completion report. The Amicus Curiae is directed to closely observe the progress made and file a counter report, if necessary, by the said date.
List this PIL for further orders on 20th August, 2025.”
