A population of about 32,000 and 107 villages have been affected in South West Garo Hills district, due to the current flood spell, that occurred as a result of heavy downpour in the region on Friday.

Flood waters have inundated at least 16 villages under Rerapara C&RD Block, affecting a population of about 10,273 people. Five relief camps have been set up at Mukdangra Bazar, LP Schools of New Harigaon and Old Harigaon, Sangkarigre waiting shed and Garobadha merong bazar to provide temporary shelter to people living in vulnerable areas.  Nine relief camps have been set up under Zikzak C&RD Block, where reportedly, 17 houses have been damaged, affecting 59 villages and a population of about 27,000 whereas, under Betasing C&RD Block, 32 villages have been affected and five relief camps have been set up. No Loss of life or injury has been reported so far.

District Administration of South West Garo Hills have started providing Gratuity Relief assistance, while PHE have started distribution of clean water in these areas.

The District Administration along with District Disaster Management team and SDRF team, who have stood by on high alert after receiving flood guidance bulletin from IMD MET Shillong, have led to an early evacuation and rescue efforts of those living in vulnerable areas after noticing the rise in water levels of Ganol, Daru and Dorni rivers.

Following the heavy rainfall, landslips and falling of trees in many areas have also been reported, which resulted in a road blockade, that was cleared by the District Administration at the earliest.
