SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement has demanded the state government to temporarily stop granting permission for limestone mining to the cement factories in East Jaintia Hills.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, general secretary of the HNAM East Jaintia Hills, Shaniah Suchen alleged the cement factories of not adhering to the norms laid down by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

“We demand the state government to temporarily stop granting permission to the cement factories for mining of limestone in the region as most of them are yet to get any clearance from the ministry,” he said.

The HANM has also expressed strong opposition against the move to hold public hearing for allowing the CMCL to mine limestone at Brishyrnot because the company is also yet to get clearance from the ministry.

“We demand the government to put on hold the said public hearing failing which we will be compelled to file a petition before the High Court for its necessary intervention into the matter,” Suchen said.
