Guwahati Airport cargo hits new high: LGBIA terminal sets single-day and monthly records, posts 124% surge

The GIAL cargo terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) has set new benchmarks in cargo handling, marking a significant leap in its operational performance. On June 28, the terminal recorded its highest-ever single-day cargo volume of 42.43 metric tonnes (MT), surpassing the previous record of 40.43 MT — a 4.95 per cent increase.
This milestone contributed to another record: monthly cargo throughput for June 2025 reached 844 MT, breaking the earlier record of 754 MT set in January. The 11.93 per cent rise highlights the airport’s growing prominence as a logistics hub in Northeast India.

The impressive growth is attributed to strategic operational upgrades and enhanced cargo handling efficiency, which have boosted the terminal’s capacity and reliability. A spokesperson from GIAL noted that these milestones reflect not only technical improvements but also the increasing economic integration of the Northeast with national supply chains.
Cargo volumes have steadily climbed throughout the first quarter of FY 2025–26. In April, the terminal processed 698.05 MT, up 96.09 percent from 356 MT in April 2024. May saw a jump from 389 MT in 2024 to 741.38 MT this year, reflecting 90.56 percent growth. June recorded the sharpest increase — 845.7 MT, a staggering 124.93 per cent rise from the previous year’s 376 MT.

Agartala and Imphal remain key origin points in the region, while Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru lead as top cargo destinations. The airport has also seen strong import activity from Bengaluru and Jaipur, with flowers emerging as a primary commodity — a sign of the region’s expanding floriculture trade.
“These achievements are not only milestones for LGBIA’s GIAL cargo terminal but also significant indicators of economic vibrancy in the Northeast,” said a GIAL spokesperson. “The growing cargo movement reflects the trust of our partners and the region’s increasing integration with national supply chains.”
With continued infrastructure enhancements and an emphasis on operational streamlining, the GIAL terminal at LGBIA is poised to play an even larger role as a critical cargo gateway for Northeast India.
