Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday said action will be taken against the culprits involved in the coal mining accident which led to five labourers being trapped inside a mine in East Jaintia Hills district.

“Action will be taken against the culprits as per provisions of the law because this is an illegal coal mine,” Rymbui told reporters.

He said the mishap has taken place at a coal mine which is located under the jurisdiction Umpleng AD Camp in Sutnga Elaka.

An FIR has been registered with the Khliehriat police station.

Rymbui also assured that the state government is taking the matter very seriously and will take necessary action to prevent such incidents.

Asked, the home minister admitted that mining activities are often halted during the monsoon seasons. “However, we cannot say if people are still trying to carry out illegal activities (even during this time),” he said.
