Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said that the state government would soon take a decision on the appointment of the new Director General of Police (DGP).

Sangma told reporters that three names in the seniority list have been sent as an empanelled list to the state government.

“Further the state government after following the due process, will take a decision on that…we will take the process forward as per the prescribed rules and norms,” he said.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has shortlisted three names from Assam-Meghalaya joint cadre for the post of Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP).

The list was forwarded to the state government on Friday. The UPSC shortlisted names are Mukesh Agrawal, KV Singh Deo (both 1989 batch) and L Ram Bishnoi (1991 batch).

On the demand for a local person to be appointed as new DGP of the state, the chief minister maintained that the state government has limited role on the issue.

“We are of course tied by procedures of the government of India and the way the UPSC gives the empanelled names, this is based purely on seniority and this is the procedure that is followed throughout the country. There is limited scope of the state government bypassing that empanelled list even though we may want or the people may desire but these procedures are very tricky, very complicated and very strict I must say and therefore, there is less room for state government to try to bend those rules so we will see how to move forward in this,” he said

“But as I said at the end of the day we have to follow the procedures that is prescribed which are followed by all the states and based on the UPSC panel that is sent to us, we  have to move forward but we are still examining the entire matter,” he added.
