Govt to sign MoU with Assam before Aug 15, five villages to come back to Meghalaya: Paul Lyngdoh

MDA government spokesperson and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh on Friday defended the government’s efforts in resolving the border dispute with Assam.
He emphasized that the government has taken concrete steps to address the issue, including sending police teams and magistrates to confront their counterparts from Assam while reacting to allegations that the government has not done anything on the illegal encroachment by Assam in Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills District.
“Had the government been indifferent we would not have sent our police team, we would not have sent our magistrates to actually confront their counterparts from Assam. So, it is unfair to say that the government has done little,” Lyngdoh told reporters.
Lyngdoh highlighted that the government has made significant progress in resolving the border dispute.
The minister announced that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed with the Assam government before August 15, which will see five new villages coming under Meghalaya’s territory.
Regarding the Langpih sector, Lyngdoh said that a final solution is close to being reached. He stated that a joint inspection needs to be undertaken, and he is awaiting confirmation from his counterpart, Mr. Patowari, who heads the committee for the Langpih sector from Assam.
Lyngdoh also mentioned that the Jaintia Hills sector is making progress, and a final solution is being clinched. He emphasized that the government is moving forward in resolving the border dispute, unlike in the past when Meghalaya’s territory was encroached without any resistance.
